What Is The Healthiest Sleeping Position?

There’s nothing quite like waking up after a good night’s sleep feeling rested and relaxed. So whether you’re a side sleeper, a back sleeper, or a stomach sleeper, there’s no wrong way to curl up in bed.

However, is there a position that can maximize the benefits of sleep?

Let’s explore whether there is a healthiest sleeping position.

Determining the Healthiest Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

At first glance, one could make the argument that sleeping on your back is the healthiest position. It allows your spine to elongate and straighten while you sleep, thus helping with its alignment. Additionally, this position is kindest to your joints, as you are not creating the pressure points on your shoulders, hips, or other joints that other sleeping positions produce. Therefore, if you are suffering from back and shoulder pain, back sleeping may be your best bet for a better sleep.

However, sleeping on your back is not for everyone hoping for that healthy sleep. For example, those who suffer from frequent heartburn may notice their symptoms worsening if they are sleeping in this position. Additionally, it has been reported that back sleeping heightens some sleep conditions, such as snoring and sleep apnea.

Side Sleepers

Sleeping on your side is the most popular sleep position for adults. Those who sleep in the fetal position may find this position actually decreases the breathing irregularities that come with sleep apnea. According to some studies, it is also recommended for women who are pregnant, as sleeping on the left side improves blood flow to the fetus.

Unfortunately, side sleepers are more prone to waking up with sore or stiff muscles and joints. By laying on your shoulders, hips, and other joints, you’re placing the majority of your weight on these pressure points. If your mattress does not properly support you, your sleep will not be benefiting you as much as it should, thus making it less healthy. It can be difficult to completely change which sleep position you take on, so to relieve some pressure, simply take a less tight fetal position, allowing your body to stretch out, or use pillows to support your legs or hips.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers make up a very small percentage of sleepers, perhaps due to the lack of comfort that many find in this position. Your body does need to work a bit harder to maintain the respiratory system, as your lungs are working both against gravity and the weight of your body.

However, by using pillows to level your body, you’re able to help with your spine’s alignment, similar to that of back sleepers.

Ultimately, sleeping positions are not one-size-fits-all. Each body is unique, so it’s all about finding a sleep position that best supports your body and allows you to wake up feeling rested. The healthiest sleeping position, therefore, is what works best for you.
