Ruined Mattress

When to Replace Your Mattress?

Nothing lasts forever – the same goes for your mattress. Many in Calgary don’t think about replacing their mattress until they need to.

Yet, what reason do you need to replace your mattress?

Check out the tell-tale signs of a mattress that needs replacing. So you can finally take your old, beat-up mattress for that long-awaited trip to the dump!

Why Replace Your Mattress?

Health and comfort are the core reasons people end up replacing their mattresses.

An old mattress accumulates years of dead skin, body oil, and dust mites. A bit gross, isn’t it? It’s why most mattress companies in Calgary recommend buying mattress protectors to combat these agents.

These buildups can exacerbate those prone to allergies and asthma.

For the allergy-prone, dust mites trigger these symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny noses
  • Itchiness
  • Watery eyes
  • Coughing
  • Sinus pressure

Any with asthma or difficulty breathing, dust mites trigger these symptoms:

  • Problems breathing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath leads to trouble sleeping

Another common issue is back pain. Changing your pillow is a good attempt to get your back pain corrected. But, if that doesn’t work, then your old mattress is the culprit.

You can’t get proper rest from an older mattress as it eventually succumbs to sagging. As a result, it becomes uneven and spinal support is compromised, which causes back pain and tossing and turning.

Signs to Replace Your Mattress

There is no real specific time to replace your mattress. The average lifespan is generally between seven to ten years, but it can vary depending on the quality of materials and use.

Factors to consider for replacing your mattress:

Lifestyle Changes – Life is filled with changes and needs shifts. Changes like illness, injury, weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and menopause are grounds for a new mattress. Seeking out a mattress that addresses your current needs will do wonders for you.

Clear Damages – If you see your bed has noticeable damage such as bumps and lumps, sagging and divots, and worse – tears resulting in springs popping out. These all would warrant needing a new mattress and throwing away your old one.

Feeling Overheated – Science says sleeping in cooler temperatures as it helps boost sleep quality and keep insomnia at bay. When you’re hot at night, it’s harder to sleep from tossing and turning constantly. Materials like synthetic latex or memory foam in your old mattress can trap heat and moisture, which causes you to heat up. It gives you the go-ahead to try a new, breathable mattress instead.

Motion Transfer – If you move in with your significant other, your mattress or theirs might not do the trick for your shared sleeping needs. The big issue couples have is motion transfer, which comes from waking one another from moving. This applies to couples sleeping together in the same bed for years too. Motion transfer becomes more prominent with time. Best to avoid cranky partners in the morning and buy a new mattress that reduces it!
